I have a confession to make: I’m always amazed when somebody says they don’t experience headaches. As someone who has been known to experience headaches, it’s unfathomable to me that people exist who have never experienced such a thing. We headache sufferers assume everybody knows what we’re talking about. According to Stovner (et al. 2022), 52% of the world population experiences headaches. 14% experience migraines. Up to 1 adult in 20 has a headache every - or nearly every - day (World Health Organization 2014). Wow. Painful. Disabling. Disruptive. Exhausting. Boring. Troublesome. Worrisome. Irksome. Annoying. I don’t think there are any pleasant words to use for headaches because having a headache is a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I have written previously about headaches and homeopathy (see: “The Road Less Traveled” and now let’s take a look at how the cell salts may help. Headaches are well indicated in most cell salts with the exception of Calc fluor and Kali mur. But, as we have learned previously, my headache is not like your headache and your headache is not like your neighbor’s headache, and so on, and so on, and so on… (See “Garbage In, Garbage Out”.) So let’s break down the cell salt headaches, shall we? Location, causation, pain quality and concomitant (accompanying) symptoms all play an important role in landing on the “right” cell salt for headaches. Calc phos may be worse near the region of sutures (a seam-like immovable junction between two bones; where the skull bones meet). The pain may be burning or throbbing and may be brought on by over-study, watching television or after receiving sad or bad news. Gut issues may be involved, like: diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea. Musculoskeletally speaking, these headaches may accompany trembling hands or rheumatism. Calc sulph has pain around the whole head. It may be caused by injuries or blows or sinusitis and may be accompanied by vertigo and nausea. A Ferr phos headache may feel as if a nail has been driven into the head with throbbing in the temples or over the eyes. These headaches could be caused by weather (cold, sun or heat) or a rush of blood to the head and may be accompanied by fever; photophobia; red eyes and face; a tender scalp or vomiting. Motion and noise may make it worse. Kali phos headaches may be described as “nervous headaches” with what feels like a weight in the back part of the head. Students or others who are worn out and exhausted may need this and may find an empty feeling in the stomach or vomiting with weariness and yawning. These headaches might be worse in the evening or in a heated room and extraneous noise may be unwanted. Kali sulph may feel like the head has been placed in a vice or as if a metal band has been put around the head. These headaches often begin in the evening and may result from becoming heated. Accompanying chills, dizziness or nausea may be present. Mag phos headache pain may be described as darting or excruciating, pounding, shooting, sharp, stinging or spasmodic. These headache sufferers may be irritable with possible sparks in their vision before or during the headache. Nat mur is a big headache remedy — for hammering, throbbing, dull, or periodical headaches with a lot of mucus and/or lachrymation and profuse saliva. Vision may be disturbed. There may be chills or constipation or eye pain. These headaches may be before, during or after a fever. Becoming heated, over-exertion of the eyes, injuries, walking or running, sun exposure or sinusitis may bring this headache on. The person may feel depressed or dull; the headache may be worse in the mornings. Nat phos headaches may be felt on the top of the head, especially on waking in the morning. These headaches are felt as pressure, intense with heat and nausea; the skull feels too full and there is a tight feeling in the head. Drinking wine or milk, as well as eyestrain may bring on this headache which may also be accompanied by gastric issues or sour vomit. Nat sulph is well known for its use in head injuries. These headaches may be felt as a pulsation on the top of the head and may be described as a “sick” headache and be accompanied by nausea and a bitter taste in the mouth with salivation. Dizziness and the vomiting of bile may be worse in damp, warm weather. Silicea headaches may be chronic and experienced as coming up from the nape of the neck. These headaches may be brought on from heat, eyestrain, fasting, overdoing it physically (lifting/straining of muscles), study or sex. The person may be oversensitive. The pain may be accompanied by chills, fever, insomnia, vomiting or weakness. Vision may be disturbed or dim and they may experience noises in the ears, a roaring, as well as being sensitive to noises. Generally speaking, headaches in children respond well to Ferr phos or Calc phos; Calc phos especially if the headache occurs during dentition. Students may respond well to Nat mur, Calc phos or Silicea. Headaches are terrible. Chronic headaches are nearly unbearable. Whoo!
The 12 Days of Cell Salts contain a lot of information. They call cell salts the easy homeopathy. They are indeed easy in that there are only 12 of them, as compared to the thousands of homeopathic remedies, but they can be a little tricky to get a handle on them. Cell salts are actually really big little remedies! Each of these cell salts are involved in so many bodily systems that it is hard to boil them down to the basics. In short, know that cell salts are:
Now, let’s take a look at cell salts from a couple of different angles… An overly simplified quick look at which cells need which salts*:
Uses of cell salts, by category of salt**:
That’s all well and good but how do you put the cell salts to use? The most important thing to do here is to purchase a book. Most conditions will respond best to cell salts being used in combination and having a handy dandy little book will be worth the trouble of finding the right book for you. At the bottom of each article on the individual cell salts, I included a reference list of the books I used for this series. My two cents for which of these books are the most useful for home use are:
A few on-line sources:
Purchasing a kit*** of the 12 cell salts is certainly more wallet-friendly than trying to put together a nice kit of homeopathic remedies and here are a few suggestions (most of which are on sale right now! All prices are accurate at time of writing):
I hope this little diversion into the land of cell salts inspires you to give these powerful little gems a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what they may do for you and your family. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits * Extracted from Esther Chapman’s How to Use the 12 Tissue Salts ** Extracted from David Card’s 12 Essential Minerals for Cellular Health *** I have no affiliation with any of these authors or companies. I have used some and others I have just stumbled upon. On the 12th day of cell salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Silicea. Silicea, aka Silica, is part of all connective tissue cells in the body — the hair, the nails, the skin. Silicea is a building block and it provides strength and stability to every part of the body. “Silicea has the power to have an impact upon virtually all aspects of the human system, especially upon bones, joints, skin, mucous membranes, and glands” (McCabe 2009). Conditions which may benefit from Silicea:
Mentally and emotionally, those who may benefit from Silicea may be shy; startles easily and a little peevish. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits Reference list

On the 11th day of cell salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Natrum sulphuricum. Nat sulph “is one of our oldest homeopathic remedies, perhaps one of the oldest medicines on earth” (McCabe 2009). Nat sulph is to be considered for those whose illness are caused by damp, wet environments — think mold. Nat sulph, like Nat mur, helps to regulate fluids. Though Nat mur attracts fluid for the body to use, Nat phos attracts fluid for the body to lose, thus Nat sulph is a good kidney support remedy. Conditions which may benefit from Nat sulph:
Mentally and emotionally, melancholy and/or an inner restlessness; those who suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Additionally, Nat sulph can be helpful for any mental conditions arising from a head injury. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits On the 10th day of cell salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Natrum phosphoricum. Nat phos is the balancer of acid. “Alkalinity is health, and over-acid conditions allow for disease” (Card 2014). Nat phos is the cell salt for whenever a condition arises due to too much acid in the body (acidosis), neutralizing the acid. Primarily, Nat phos if for those who suffer from chronic digestive disorders and/or arthritis. Conditions which may benefit from Nat phos:
Mentally and emotionally, Nat phos may be indicated through anxiety, fearfulness and sleeplessness. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits Reference list

On the 9th day of cells salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Natrum muriaticum. Nat mur is made from Chloride of Soda, also known as Common Table Salt. It is a water distributor — bringing balance to the distribution of fluids in the body. Nat mur is the cell salt for mucous membranes — any time things are too dry or too wet: watery discharges (like tearing eyes) or dryness and dehydration. Conditions which may benefit from Nat mur:
Mentally and emotionally, low spirits, irritability, especially from little things; melancholy, weeps easily; grief. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits Reference list

On the 8th day of cell salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Magnesium phosphoricum. Like Kali phos, Mag phos helps with nerve issues but dealing with muscular nerves and fibers. Mag phos is an anti-spasmodic and anti-neuralgic — a relaxant for nerves and muscles as well as a nerve stabilizer. Mag phos is the nutritional remedy of the nerves. Mag phos is an excellent pain remedy: pains that shoot from place to place; spasmodic pains; sharp pains; cramping pains; pains that come and go suddenly — conditions like PMS. For pains that run along nerves like sciatica. Conditions which may benefit from Mag phos:
Mentally and emotionally, Mag phos may be irritable, angry, sleepless — their pain is taking center stage. Mag phos is a little different than all the other cells salts in that it “acts especially well, given in hot water” (Boericke 1916). “For speedy symptomatic relief of spasmodic ailments, dissolve 1-2 tablets under the tongue. Then dissolve 2-3 tablets in some hot water, taken in sips. Hold the liquid under the tongue for a minute each time. The 6x potency is usually sufficient” (Weintraub 1999). Kali sulph is the cell salt for the skin, helping to build new skin cells. It also works in conjunction with Ferr phos to help blood carry oxygen to all the cells. Think of Kali sulph for active inflammatory conditions. Inflammation of the mucous membranes: bronchitis and whooping cough, for example, where discharges are thick, stringy, ropy and tough. Inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dandruff. Conditions which may benefit from Kali sulph:
Mentally and emotionally, those who may benefit from Kali sulph may be irritable and unpredictable moods. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits Reference list

On the sixth day of cells salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Kali phosporicum. Kali phos is concentrated in the brain and nerves. It is known for its bright yellow discharges, as well as putridity. Kali phos is the cell salt for nerves and nervous conditions. For oversensitivity: mental, physical, emotional. For fatigue. Kali phos is a nerve nutrient which can help calm the entire system. Conditions which may benefit from Kali phos:
Mentally and emotionally, Kali phos may be very helpful, especially in cases of depression and homesickness. It may be useful in cases of burnout and exhaustion as well as anxiety and grief. Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits Reference list

On the 5th day of cell salts… Kali muriaticum Kali mur is the clean up crew — good in the second stage of infections or illnesses with slowly developing symptoms. It usually follows well after other cell salts. (For example, use Ferr phos at the beginning of a fever and as the temperature comes down, follow up with Kali mur to help bring things to a close and shorten the recovery time. Kali mur is useful in chronic catarrhal conditions (congestion) and helps with the production of saliva which in turn helps with digestion. The throat and the Eustachian tube are most influenced by Kali mur. Conditions which may benefit from Kali mur:
Mentally and emotionally, Kali mur are hungry people (which also may mean they may suffer from an eating disorder). Julia Coyte, CHom Classically Practical homeopath #wellnessawaits Reference list
